![]() ![]() Intel undoubtedly brings its Raptor Lake architecture to the forefront with its first-ever 6 GHz processor, the Core i9-13900KS, which caters to gamers and the enthusiast market too, with binned silicon designed to offer ultimate levels of compute performance from a desktop platform. The latter is directly targeted at gamers, with an edge in titles that can utilize large pools of 元 cache. Since our previous guide, both Intel and AMD have launched two top-tier processors with exceptional gaming performance to the market, the Intel Core i9-13900KS and, more recently, AMD's gaming-centric Ryzen 9 7950X3D with its 3D V-Cache packaging technology. Depending on the task at hand, Intel and AMD have strong line-ups with multiple generations of its processors, with both the latest 13th Gen core series (Raptor Lake) and the Ryzen 7000 series (Zen 4/Rapael) leading the charge at the top of the performance charts. The CPU market towards the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 has been topsy-turvy, to say the least, with many viable options available for users to build a new system. Moving into the warmer and more picturesque spring season, the weather isn't the only thing hotting up. All numbers in the text are updated to reflect pricing at the time of writing. ![]() Primate Labs recently updated to version 6 for Geekbench, which we've started using on all new MacBooks. In our series of Best CPU guides, here's the latest update to our recommended Gaming CPUs list. Geekbench's CPU tests measure the performance of a mixed workload. On Android, Apple devices and Chromebooks, we run the CPU tests and the Compute test. Primate Labs Geekbench 5: We run both single-core and multicore CPU tests, and either the Vulcan (Windows) or Metal (MacOS) Compute test. There's also an extended set of tests for specific use cases, such as gaming or content creation, where systems may have more powerful GPUs or higher-resolution displays that need to be evaluated. Our benchmark tests consist of a core set we run on every compatible system including several we can run on both MacOS and Windows PCs. Then we update the OS, GPU drivers, BIOS and manufacturer utilities as needed and use an application such as Sandra from SiSoftware to gather information about the system's components, such as the CPU, GPU and RAM. ![]() As a best practice, during the setup, we disable as much of the invasive privacy and data collection options as possible. When a computer - typically a laptop, desktop, two-in-one hybrid or Chromebook - arrives at the CNET Labs, we set it up as a typical user of the product would. More expensive than the Air but essentially has the same performance and same Apple M2 chip. The 13-inch MacBook Pro remains a tough sell. The new design and camera are great, as is the bigger screen, but the older $999 M1 version of the MacBook Air is still great if you don't want to spend $200 more on the M2 version. For most people, this is all the MacBook they'll need.
